WHY GROW COMMON TEASEL?

• The Goldfinch's Favorite: Teasels are one of the most important plants for garden birds. In winter, their sturdy, dried seed heads become a natural bird feeder, famously attracting charms of Goldfinches who feast on the seeds.

• Pollinator Hub: The unique flowering pattern—where blooms start in a ring around the middle and move upwards and downwards—is a fascination for bees and butterflies, providing a rich nectar source.

• Nature's "Water Tank": The leaves grow in pairs and are fused at the stem to form small cups that collect rainwater. These "miniature ponds" provide a vital drinking source for insects and small birds during dry spells.

• Winter Interest: Even after the color fades, the dramatic, spiky silhouettes remain standing throughout the winter, looking spectacular when covered in frost or used in striking indoor dried floral displays.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

• When to Sow: April to June (for flowers the following year) or late summer.

• Sowing: Sow on the surface of moist, well-prepared soil. Cover with a very fine layer of soil (approx. 3mm)

• Temperature: Maintain a temperature of 15°C – 20°C.

• Germination: Reliable and hardy, usually appearing within 14–21 days.

• Care: Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to about 60cm apart to give them room for their impressive mature size. They are exceptionally tough and will grow in almost any soil type, though they particularly enjoy heavy clay. Teasels will self-seed freely, ensuring a permanent and beautiful presence in your garden.
