WHY GROW PHACELIA?

  • The Ultimate Bee Magnet: Phacelia consistently ranks in the top ten nectar-producing plants for bees. It is so attractive to pollinators that it is often used by farmers to draw bees and hoverflies into fruit orchards and vegetable patches.

  • Exceptional Green Manure: Gardeners love Phacelia because its dense root system improves soil structure, while its foliage can be dug back into the earth to provide a massive boost of organic matter and nitrogen.

  • Natural Pest Control: The flowers are a favorite of hoverflies, whose larvae are voracious predators of aphids (greenfly), making this a fantastic companion plant for roses and vegetables.

  • Stunning & Fast-Growing: It is incredibly quick to flower, often blooming just 6–8 weeks after sowing, providing a rapid splash of cooling blue tones to any sunny spot.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

  • When to Sow: March to September. Sowing in small batches every few weeks will provide a continuous carpet of flowers all summer long.

  • Sowing: Sow directly into finely raked, weed-free soil. Cover the seeds with approximately 1cm (0.5 inches) of soil, as darkness is required for germination.

  • Temperature: Germinates best at temperatures between 12°C – 20°C.

  • Germination: Fast and reliable, usually appearing within 7–14 days.

  • Care: Keep the area moist until the plants are established. Phacelia is very unfussy and will grow in almost any soil type, provided it is in a sunny position. If using as a green manure, dig the plants into the soil before they go to seed. If growing for bees, simply let them bloom and enjoy the hum of activity!
