WHY GROW COMMON SORREL?
A Feast for Birds: As the flowers fade, they produce an abundance of small, nutty seeds that are a crucial food source for ground-feeding birds and finches during the later months.
Support for Butterflies: Common Sorrel is a primary larval food plant for the beautiful Small Copper butterfly, making it an essential addition to any conservation-minded garden.
Culinary Heritage: The young, bright green leaves have a refreshing, lemon-like tang. They are perfect for adding zest to salads, soups (the classic Sorrel Soup), or as an accompaniment to fish.
Architectural Interest: In mid-summer, the plant sends up tall, branched spikes of tiny reddish flowers that add a delicate, misty texture to meadows and borders, contrasting beautifully with broader-leaved plants.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
When to Sow: March to May or September to October.
Sowing: Sow thinly into well-prepared, weed-free soil or trays of moist compost. Cover very lightly with a fine dusting of soil or vermiculite (approx. 3mm).
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 15°C – 20°C for optimal germination.
Germination: Usually occurs within 10–14 days.
Care: Thin seedlings to 20cm apart. Common Sorrel is incredibly easy-going; it thrives in most soil types but prefers a moist, slightly acidic spot in full sun or partial shade. Keep well-watered during dry spells to ensure the leaves remain tender if harvesting for the kitchen.
