• ACANTHUS MOLLIS MORNING CANDLE BEARS BREACHES PERENNIAL SEEDS - 5 SEEDS
Morning Candle is a herbaceous perennial.  It grows up to 1.2m tall with deeply-toothed dark green leaves and  spikes of hooded white flowers, protected by prickly purple bracts.

Soil Preparation:

Acanthus mollis, commonly known as Bear's Breeches, prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly alkaline pH range of 7.0 to 8.0. Choose a planting site that receives full sun for at least six hours per day. Before planting, enrich the soil by incorporating organic matter, such as compost or aged manure, to improve drainage, fertility, and water retention.

Sowing Seeds:

Acanthus mollis seeds can be sown directly outdoors in early spring after the last frost has passed, typically in late April or early May. Alternatively, you can start the seeds indoors four to six weeks before the last frost. For indoor sowing, fill seed trays or individual pots with a sterile seed starting mix. Sow the seeds thinly and cover them with a light dusting of soil. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Place the trays or pots in a warm, shaded location, maintaining a temperature between 60 to 70°F (15 to 21°C). Germination may take 4 to 6 weeks.

Transplanting Seedlings:

Once the seedlings have formed two sets of true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted outdoors. Gradually acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days to harden them off. Choose a suitable planting site that receives full sun and has well-drained soil. Space the seedlings 18 to 24 inches apart to prevent overcrowding.

Care and Maintenance:

Regular watering is essential for Acanthus mollis plants, especially during hot, dry periods. Provide deep watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and prevent seed formation, which can divert energy from flower production. Mulching around the plants with organic matter, such as shredded leaves or bark, helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Additional Tips:

Acanthus mollis plants may require staking to support their weight and prevent them from toppling over, especially as they mature and produce their signature flower spikes.
Fertilize the plants every few weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms.
Acanthus mollis plants are relatively resistant to pests and diseases, but keep an eye out for common garden pests like slugs and snails.
By following these guidelines and providing proper care, you can cultivate a stunning display of Acanthus mollis plants that will add a touch of architectural interest and dramatic foliage to your garden for years to come.
